Error when sending message to shared distribution list "Cannot perform the requested operation. The command selected is not vali
Hi We are running Exchange on our SBS2003 system. I recently created a public folder in Exchange System Manager, andadded a distribution list to the folder ("OfficeContacts"). Most of the time everyone on the network is able to send messages to "OfficeContacts" without any problems (using MS Outlook). However, at seemingly random intervals, when a user attempts to send the message or expand the distribution list to view all the contacts, the following error messages appear and the message cannot be sent. "Cannot perform the requested operation. The command selected is not valid for this recipient. Could not complete the operation. One or more parameters are not valid". Once the user clicks "ok" the following message appears "An internal support function returned an error". In most situations if the user closes Outlook completely and reopens it, they can then send the message. I have searched high and low with Google - and have come across several people with the same issue, but have not found details on how to fix this... Any ideas on how to resolve this and help free my colleagues from the raptures of Mondyitis? Cheers

I would make sure you are running the latest patches in Outlook and also if you are running any client side AV that hooks directly into Outlook you may want to try to disable it in order to see if that might be contributing to the problem. The other thing you could do it re-create that contact and/or distribtion list inActive Directory rather than relying on the Office file DLs.

Hi Joel Thanks for these ideas! All of our computers are running the latest MS patches and we are running McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v.8. I tried to re-create the distribution list in Active Directory - but was told "You can only create a query-based distribution group object in Exchange Server 2003 native mode" - am not quite sure what this means... we are only running the one SBS 2003 server for our mail, file sharing etc.... not quite sure where to go next... Am quite new to MS Exchange soam sure I'mmissing something simple! Cheers...

In order to have a list of external contacts you will need to create "Contacts" in active directory. You can then create a standard mail enabled group and add those contacts to the group. This way everything is store id AD but is much less likely to become corrupted by an end user.

I have a similar issue, except when I try to reply to a message from a contact outside of my local intranet, I get an error message seemingly at random: "Cannot complete the operation. One or more perimeter values are incorrect." There doesn't seem toany patternwhen it does this.
